Reselling Platforms to Choose From

eBay: The Original Reselling Powerhouse (and Still King?) Our Favorite Platform!

eBay is a giant in the reselling world, boasting a massive global audience and a diverse range of product categories. But is it right for you?

  • Pros: Huge buyer base (think millions!), diverse product categories (from vintage clothing and collectibles to electronics and home goods), auction format for unique or high-demand items, robust seller tools and resources, established trust, and buyer protection.

  • Cons: Higher fees than some other platforms, increased competition (you'll need to stand out!), can be more complex to navigate for beginners.

  • Best For: Sellers with a wide variety of items. You can sell almost anything on eBay! Also a good option for sellers comfortable with the auction format and managing higher volume.

  • SEO Tip:  When listing on eBay, use relevant keywords in your titles and descriptions. Think about what buyers would search for. For example, instead of "Vintage Dress," try "Vintage 1950s Floral Dress Size Medium." Poshmark: Your Social Hub for Fashion Reselling

If fashion is your passion, Poshmark is your playground. It's a social marketplace with a strong community focus, perfect for building a brand and connecting with fashion-forward buyers.

  • Pros: Laser-focused on clothing, shoes, and accessories, social features (parties, sharing) encourage engagement and sales, simplified listing process, flat-rate shipping (easy for sellers).

  • Cons: Primarily focused on fashion, higher fees than some platforms, less control over shipping costs, smaller audience compared to eBay.

  • Best For: Sellers specializing in clothing, shoes, and accessories, those who enjoy social selling, building a community, and curating a specific style or aesthetic.

  • SEO Tip: Use relevant hashtags on your Poshmark listings to increase visibility. #vintagefashion #poshmark #reseller #fashionfinds

Mercari: The Easy-Going Mobile Marketplace

Mercari is known for its user-friendly interface and mobile-first approach, making it a breeze to list and sell items quickly, right from your phone.

  • Pros: Simple and intuitive interface, the mobile app makes listing and managing sales super easy, with lower fees than Poshmark and eBay, and a wider range of categories than Poshmark (but not as broad as eBay).

  • Cons: Smaller buyer base than eBay, less seller support than some platforms, can be susceptible to lower offers, competition can be fierce.

  • Best For: Sellers looking for a quick and easy way to list and sell various items, especially those comfortable with mobile selling and managing a higher volume of lower-priced items.

  • SEO Tip: Take clear, well-lit photos of your items on a neutral background. Good photos are essential for attracting buyers to Mercari.

Facebook Marketplace: Your Local Reselling Goldmine

Facebook Marketplace taps into the power of Facebook's massive user base to connect you with local buyers.

  • Pros: Free to list, connects you with local buyers (no shipping!), great for larger or bulky items that are difficult to ship (furniture, appliances), and can build relationships with local customers.

  • Cons: Primarily focused on local sales, can be time-consuming to arrange meetups, potential safety concerns with in-person transactions, and less control over payment methods.

  • Best For: Sellers looking to sell locally, those with large or bulky items, and those comfortable with in-person interactions.

  • SEO Tip: Join local buy/sell groups on Facebook to expand your reach and connect with potential buyers in your area.

Beyond the Big Three: Exploring Niche Platforms

  • Etsy: Your go-to for handmade or vintage treasures.

  • Depop: The Gen Z haven for unique fashion finds.

  • The RealReal: Luxury consignment for high-end designer items.

Choosing the Right Platform for You: Your Reselling Checklist

  • Your Niche: What types of items are you selling? (Vintage clothing? Electronics? Furniture?)

  • Target Audience: Who are you trying to reach? (Fashion enthusiasts? Collectors? Bargain hunters?)

  • Fees: How much will it cost you to sell on each platform? Factor this into your pricing.

  • Shipping: How will you handle shipping? Consider costs and packaging.

  • Features: What tools and resources are available to sellers on each platform?

  • Competition: How saturated is the market for your items on each platform?

Don't Limit Yourself: Diversify Your Reselling Strategy

Many successful resellers use multiple platforms to maximize their reach and tap into different buyer markets. Experiment, analyze your results, and find what works best for your reselling business!

For us at J & M Marketplace, eBay remains the undisputed champion of online reselling platforms. It's where we conduct about 90% of our business, and for good reason! The sheer volume of potential buyers, coupled with the platform's versatility, makes it a powerhouse for sellers like us. Whether we're moving vintage toys, showcasing sports cards, finding new homes for pre-owned appliances, or even selling lawn equipment, eBay's broad reach allows us to connect with a diverse customer base.

While some may find eBay intimidating, we've discovered that with a few key tricks and a consistent approach, listing items daily becomes a breeze. From optimizing titles and descriptions to mastering the art of product photography, we've honed our eBay selling strategy to maximize visibility and drive sales. It's truly our favorite platform for reaching a wide audience and moving a diverse range of inventory.

Beyond eBay, we also utilize Facebook Marketplace strategically, primarily for newer, bulkier items where local pickup is ideal. This helps us avoid hefty shipping costs and platform fees. We also maintain a presence on Mercari, though we're a bit more selective about what we list there. We've found sales to be slower on Mercari, and it often seems like potential buyers are quick to "like" items but hesitant to make reasonable offers, frequently opting for lowball bids instead.
